Glasgow is not located within a county, but rather is a unitary authority area, meaning it has its own council and is independent of any larger administrative division. Previously, Glasgow was part of the historic county of Lanarkshire, which included several other towns and cities. However, this county was abolished in 1975 and its area was split between several new council areas, including Glasgow.
